Under-slung Grenade Launcher

The Under-slung Grenade Launcher (UGL) L17A1/A2 is the under-barrel 40 mm grenade launcher used by the British Army in conjunction with the L85A2 rifle (L17A2 UGL), and in small numbers with the L119A1 rifle used by the SAS (L17A1 UGL).
It is designed and built by Heckler & Koch (HK) and is a modified variant of their AG36.
The capability to mount UGL in conjunction with L85 was developed as part of the ‘A2’ modification programme undertaken by HK in 2000-2002. UGL was first seen in use during Operation Telic in 2003.
UGL replaces the muzzle launched Rifle Grenade General Service (RGGS) and the platoon level 51 mm mortar. One UGL will be issued per fireteam within infantry battalions.
