Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to other-language Wikipedias. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

WikiProject Echo

[edit] Scope and goals

While the English Wikipedia is the oldest and largest one, many of the other-language Wikipedias contain information not yet found in the English 'pedia. The scope of this project is to find information present in some other Wikipedia but not here, and repeat ('echo') it here. Generally, the information has to be translated in the process.

Given that this may be a very broad scope on other-language Wikipedias, it may be worthwhile to start from their Featured Articles (or equivalent) first.

[edit] Structure

Participants on this WikiProject must have an account on at least one other Wikipedia project, and should be reasonably fluent in both English and the language used on that other Wikipedia project in order to make a reasonable translation of the information. This need not be perfect, we have cleanup tags for a reason.

The process is as follows:

  1. Go to the other-language Wikipedia.
  2. Look around (through categories, by hitting the random page button, etc) until you find a page that is not linked to the English Wikipedia. Good pages to look out for are those on local geography or local personalities; pages on general concepts are more likely to already exist on the English Wikipedia.
  3. Edit that page to add a interwiki link [[en:PAGETITLE]], thus linking it to the English Wikipedia.
  4. Create that page on the English Wikipedia, linking it back with a similar tag.
  5. If the original page was a featured article, add the FAOL template to the talk page here.
  6. Translate and add enough information from the other 'pedia into the English 'pedia to make the new article at least a viable stub. Preferably, translate all of it.
  7. If necessary, add appropriate categories, tag as stub if it's short, and tag for cleanup if you're unsure of your translation skills.
  8. Repeat as necessary.
