Xiomara de Zelaya

Xiomara Castro de Zelaya has been the first lady of Honduras since January 2006 as the wife of President Manuel Zelaya. The daughter of Olga Doris Sarmiento Montoya and Irene Castro Reyes, she was born in Tegucigalpa on September 30, 1959. She is second of five children.
She accomplished studies of primary and secondary in the "Instituto San Jose del Carmen" and "Maria Auxiliadora", where she stood out by her high sense of collaboration and generosity with her companions and teachers and by her assiduous participation in the student and cultural activities. Additionally she obtained graduates in Accounting, Enterprise Management and Companies' Administration.
In January 1976, she married Manuel Zelaya. Just married, they set their residence in Catacamas, Olancho, where their four children were born: Zoe, Héctor Manuel, Xiomara Hortensia and Jose Manuel.
Between her social activities, it’s emphasized her participation in the Association of Spouses of Members of the Rotary Club of Catacamas, founded by her husband, as well as the proceedings developed within the Group to take care of the children needy in the vast department of Olancho.
Also, she participated in the creation of the "Centro de Cuidado Diurno para Niños en Catacamas", with the purpose of offering attendance to women family leaders. Parallel it supported the creation of projects of basic cleaning, sowing of vegetables and floriculture, just as important projects of job development. She organized the feminine branch of the Liberal Party of Honduras in the major city of Olancho and made a strong campaign in favor of Zelaya Rosales in the internal elections of February of 2004, occasion in which was in charge of sub political coordination of this Olancho municipality.
Permanently she has accompanied her husband in the activities that he has had to carry out at different moments from their enterprises and political trajectory. It allowed the First Lady to share the vision of country of President Zelaya Rosales. Doña Iris Xiomara, has been – in sum the firmest support of the proposal of the “Poder Ciudadano”.
Conscientious like she is of the responsibilities that she has assumed with Honduras, the First Lady propels a complete program of social projection in benefit of the relegated sectors of Honduras.
