Zumaia (Spanish: Zumaya) is a little town in the north of Spain in the Basque Country. The town has two beaches, and boasts of having the home-museum of the painter Ignacio Zuloaga. Zumaia is located on a privileged spot in the coast of Guipúzcoa, on the shore of the sea and the bay, at the point where the Urola and Narrondo rivers come together. The origins of this town can be traced to its ancient monastery. In the Middle Ages, the people that lived in the Sehatz valley, sick of enduring the continuous attacks of pirates and pillagers, fortified the city. Their church today retains its defensive appearance.
The city has two beaches: Itzurun and Santiago; as well as many interesting places such as Zuloaga's home-museum it also exhibits works by El Greco, Rivera, Zurbarán and Goya. Across the street there is a museum of crafts and hand-crafted products of "Laia". Within the city centre, one finds the Basque-style Gothic church of San Pedro. It has a temple with a magnificent reredos by Juan de Antxieta, the only work by this Basque sculptor found in Gipuzkoa.
