El género Aesculus comprende 20 a 25 especies de árboles deciduos y arbustos nativos del hemisferio norte templado, con 7 a 10 especies nativas de Norteamérica y 13 a 15 especies nativas de Eurasia; hay también varios híbridos naturales. Tradicionalmente fueron tratados en su propia familia monogenérica Hippocastanaceae, pero la evidencia genética muestra que esta familia, dentro de los arces (Aceraceae), son mejor incluídas en la familia (Sapindaceae).
Las spp. norteamericanas se conocen como Buckeyes y las spp. de Eurasia como castaños de la India; "castaño blanco", "castaño rojo" (dentro de las flores de Bach). El nombre "castaño de la India", es para evitar confusión con los verdaderos castaños (Castanea, Fagaceae). Una especie muy popular en cultivo, el Aesculus hippocastanum es el "Castaño de la India" por autonomasia. Linneo llamó al género Aesculus por el nombre romano para ese árbol comestible.
Las Aesculus son leñosas de 4 a 35 m de altura (depende de las spp.), y tiene ramas rectas resinosas; hojas opuestas, palmadas, muy largas (hasta 65 cm en el Aesculus turbinata); flores entomófilas, con 4 a 5 pétalos lobulados, fusionados en la base). La floración comienza luego de 80 a 110 de suma térmica (días grado de crecimiento). El fruto es una nuez marrón oscura de 2 a 5 cm de diámetro, globoso con una en una cubierta verde a marrón, a veces son dos nueces en esa cubierta, en tal caso son chatas en un solo lado. La cubierta puede tener suaves espinas en ciertas spp., glabras en otras, y dividirse en tres secciones para la deshidencia de las nueces.
The most familiar member of the genus worldwide is the Common Horse-chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum, native to a small area of the Balkans in southeast Europe, but widely cultivated throughout the temperate world. The Yellow Buckeye Aesculus flava (syn. A. octandra) is also a valuable ornamental tree with yellow flowers, but is less widely planted. Among the smaller species, the Bottlebrush Buckeye Aesculus parviflora also makes a very interesting and unusual flowering shrub. Several other members of the genus are used as ornamentals, and several horticultural hybrids have also been developed, most notably the Red Horse-chestnut A. x carnea, a hybrid between A. hippocastanum and A. pavia.
They are generally fairly problem-free, though a recently discovered leaf-mining moth Cameraria ohridella is currently causing major problems in much of Europe, causing premature leaf fall which looks very unattractive. The symptoms (brown blotches on the leaves) can be confused with damage caused by the leaf fungus Guignardia aesculi, which is also very common but usually less serious. Common Horse-chestnut is also used as a food plant by The Sycamore, another species of moth.

Los frutos tienen altas concentraciones de una saponina tóxica: aesculina, muy tóxica para muchos animales, en el humano causa hemolisis (destrucción de glóbulo rojos). Esa saponina se elimina lavando nueces pulverizadas con agua hirviendo, obteniéndose un almidón muy importante en algunos pueblos originarios. Some animals, notably deer and squirrels, are resistant to the toxins and can eat the nuts directly.
Crushed buckeye nuts have also been thrown into lakes by poachers, to kill fish for easy capture.
California Buckeyes Aesculus californica are known to cause poisoning of honeybees from toxic nectar (other locally native bee species not being affected). Other buckeye species are thought to have the same effect, but the toxins are diluted because the trees are not usually abundant enough in any one area.
The wood is very pale whitish-brown, fairly soft and little-used. Uses include cheap furniture, boxes and firewood.

In Britain and Ireland the game of conkers remains a common childhood pastime.
In some cultures, the buckeye tree is thought to bring good luck.[1][2]
The Mexican Buckeye is related to Aesculus, but is in a separate genus, Ungnadia.
