[edit] Summary
Description |
The map depicts the major expeditions in Australia between 1863 and 1880 AD as well as the major settlements founded during that period. All expeditions on the map were led by men of British or British-Australian descent and are therefore coloured in shades of red. The areas probably unknown to the Europeans in 1881 AD are shaded. Their borders and the tracks are only approximate. The names given are those of the leaders of the expeditions. The cross-barred black line in the middle of Australia between Adelaide and Darwin represents the Overland Telegraph line which was built between 1870 and 1872 AD.
