Colombo (කොළඹ in Sinhala; கொழும்பு in Tamil) is the capital city of Sri Lanka and its largest city. It has a population of 2,200,000. It is located on the southwest coast close to the present capital of Kotte. The name Colombo is borrowed from Sinhala language name Kola-amba-thota which means "harbor with leafy mango trees". Traveller Ibn Batuta in the 14th century referred to it as Kalanpu.
