Quebec (spelled Québec in French) is a province in Canada. It is the biggest of Canada's ten provinces. Unlike the rest of the provinces, most of the people in Quebec speak French.
The government of Quebec has its offices in the capital, Quebec City, one of the oldest cities in North America. The largest city in Quebec, and the second-largest city in Canada, is Montreal.
Since Quebec is a mainly French-speaking province, many people there feel that it is very different from the rest of Canada, and they are proud of this difference and want to keep it that way. Some feel that for this to happen, Quebec must leave Canada and become its own country. Others feel that it is important for Quebec to stay a part of Canada. In 1995, the people of Quebec voted on the question, and chose to stay in Canada by a one percent margin.
