Subject
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
Subject (pronounce: SUB-ject) means a topic, a thing that is being talked about. For example the weather. A subject can be written or read about. If a book is about France, the subject of the book is France. In a country with a king or queen the citizens are often also called subjects.
Subject is also a term in grammar, used to describe what a sentence is about (i.e. in the sentence "The dog jumped over the fence," dog is the subject, as the dog is the thing that is jumping.)
Compare: Object
To Subject (pronounce: sub-JECT) is a verb. It usually means that you make someone do something or suffer something:
- 'The Romans conquered Britain and subjected the people to their rule.'
- 'The prisoner was subjected to torture'.
- 'The thief was subjected to cross-examination'.
