Sumer was an ancient civilization located in the southern part of Mesopotamia (modern day southeastern Iraq). This civilization came into being about 3500 BC. Sumer civilisation grew on the fertile banks of river Tigris and Euphratis, which drain into the Persian Gulf. Sumerian culture is famous for their written script - in which letters were formed by pressing a triangle shaped reed into wet-clay tiles. They are also credited for dividing a day into 24 hours and each hour into 60 minutes.
The Sumerian communities were organised in city states, each ruled by priests. Most famous of the Sumerian city was Ur.
Sumerians disappears from history about 2000 BC as a result of attacks from outsiders.
