[edit] In the Pokémon anime
The Pokémon anime series and films are a meta-series of adventures separate from the canon that most of the Pokémon video games follow (with the exception of Pokémon Yellow, a game based on the anime storyline). The anime follows the quest of the main character, Ash Ketchum[3]—an in-training Pokémon Master—as he, May, Hikari, and several other companions[3] travel around the fictitious world of Pokémon along with their Pokémon partners, Pikachu, Blaziken,[4] and Pochama.[5]
In the anime, Hikari is from Futaba Town in Sinnoh. Her mother Ayako was once a Top Pokémon coordinator, having won the Grand Festival. Wishing to follow in her mother's footsteps, Hikari set out to become a Pokémon coordinator. Her starter Pokémon was a Pochama. Upon starting her journey, Hikari saw the legendary Pokémon Emurit (which ties her to Ash Ketchum, who saw Ho-oh at the start of his journey). Also upon beginning her journey, Hikari came across an injured Pikachu who, whilst defending itself from Team Rocket, destroyed her bike (a running gag in the series; both May and Misty have had their bikes fried by an errant bolt of lightning). As it turned out, the Pikachu she came across was the injured Pokémon of Ash. She is currently traveling through Sinnoh with Ash and Brock.

- Pochama is Hikari's starter Pokémon. Having run off from Professor Nanakamado's lab in a dispute with a Hikozaru, Hikari found Pochama trapped in the web of a wild Ariados and freed the Pokémon. The pair bonded and Hikari chose Pochama as her starter. Pochama is a bit of a brat and lost its first battle, though it is a determined Pokémon who was very excited about Hikari's proposal of competing in Pokémon Contests. Hikari and Pochama share a close bond, although they do tend to get into fights.
-
- Hikari captured a Mimiroru in the ninth episode of the Diamond and Pearl series. Within the first four episodes, she had twice tried to catch a Mimiroru, but failed both times. In both the manga and the anime, her Mimirol has a crush on Ash's Pikachu.
[edit] In the Pokémon video games
Hikari is the female protagonist of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl; as such, is a playable character. However, if the player chooses to play the male character, she will be one of their rivals.
