Kent School is an independent (private) co-ed prep school in Kent, Connecticut, established in 1906 by The Reverend Frederick Herbert Sill, a member of the monastic Order of the Holy Cross. It has 565 students, of whom about 88% are boarders. Kent's mascot is the Lion, and its motto is Temperantia, Fiducia, Constantia, a not-quite-accurate Latin translation of "Simplicity of Life, Directness of Purpose, Self-Reliance." It is located in a picturesque setting between the Appalachian Trail and the Housatonic River with mountains rising behind its playing fields. The school has produced a number of notable figures in American culture and entertainment, including Ted Danson, John Rawls, and Seth MacFarlane.
The book (and 1999 film made from it), Outside Providence is a fictionalized account of Peter Farrelly's experiences at the school.

[edit] History
In 1960, a girls' campus was constructed a few miles up the hill from the grounds. In 1992, campus consolidation was completed and the girls now have dorms on main campus. Kent School is a member of the Founders League composed of the most prestigious New England prep schools. This League was created in order to create sport competitors.
Loomis Chaffee and Kent School have a long-running rivalry. The two schools take this historic enmity quite seriously, and have annual Kent vs. Loomis days in which both schools play a number of sports to compete for a spoon and a bowl. The spoon is awarded to the winner of the football game while the bowl is awarded to the school that won the most sporting events on that day. Kent usually wins the spoon while Loomis usually wins the bowl. In 2004, Loomis Chaffee withdrew from the Founders League in order to recruit more post-graduate student athletes, thereby rendering the school ineligible to legitimately compete with the Kent School during the "Spoon Day" competition. (as Loomis Chaffe is no longer a member of the Founders League).
