KRCG, Channel 13 is the CBS affiliate for the Mid-Missouri region, serving the Columbia-Jefferson City Area from Jefferson City, Missouri, the capital city of Missouri. KRCG aired some programming from UPN, until UPN ceased operations in September of 2006. The original license for the station was granted to Betty Weldon in 1955, current publisher of the Jefferson City News-Tribune. Following the death of her father, Robert C. Goshorn, Mrs. Weldon christened the station KRCG in his honor.
At the time KRCG went on the air there was only one television outlet in Mid-Missouri, KOMU, which had access to all three networks. When KRCG signed on, it affiliated with CBS and has remained a CBS affiliate ever since. KRCG is the only station in the market that has retained the same network affiliation throughout its existence. The other network affiliates in the market (KOMU and KCBJ/KMIZ) have switched networks twice (first in 1982, then reverted back to their original networks in 1986).
In 1967, KRCG was sold to Mid-America Television Company, a subsidiary of Kansas City Southern Industries, which retained the station until 1985, when it was sold to Price Communications Corporation. After three years KRCG was sold to Mel Wheeler, Inc., which owned the station until March 2005, when KRCG was purchased by Barrington Broadcasting. Its transmitter is located near Holts Summit, Missouri.
