Manaphy (マナフィ Manafi?) is a recently released character in the Pokémon franchise. Its debut is in the 9th Pokémon Movie Pokémon Ranger and the Prince of the Sea: Manaphy, and is thought to be the Prince of the Sea Pokémon alluded to the title. It was the 6th Pokémon of the fourth generation to be revealed by Coro Coro magazine. It was also revealed with the silhouettes of three other Pokémon; The first one being Tamanta (the pre-evolution of Mantine), then Buoysel, and Perap. Manaphy is the official romanization of マナフィ, the Japanese name for this Pokémon. The final English name has been revealed in the recent U.S. release of Pokemon Ranger to be Manaphy.
[edit] In the video games
Manaphy appears in the Nintendo DS games, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The only way to get Manaphy in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl is transferring his egg to the games from Pokemon Ranger, where it will hatch. Manaphy's egg can be obtained only in Pokémon Ranger by means of a side mission, according to Serebii.net, it has recently been discovered that you will be able to transfer the egg to hatch in Sinnoh (Pokemon Diamond and Pearl), but you will need to do it through LAN which means you need two Nintendo DS systems. Manaphy is #151 in the Sinnoh PokeDex.
Unlike most of its other secret legendary counterparts(Mew, Celebi, Jirachi and Deoxys), Manaphy is not a Psychic Type, however, it can learn a number of Psychic attacks.
Manaphy is the only breedable legendary but its offspring is Fione, a Pokemon very similar to Manaphy yet with inferior stats (80 in all of them instead of 100) and lacks Tail Glow and Heart Swap. Furthermore, Fione cannot evolve into Manaphy in any way. According to the Pokedex entry, Manaphy is born in cold waters, while Fione prefers to live in warm waters. Fione's name might be in reference to the Pokemon Ranger region Fiore, where, through a special event in Japan, Manaphy's egg can be obtained and transferred to Pokemon Diamond or Pearl. According to Serebii.net, the Manaphy mission is not available in-game. However there is a possible method that may allow the player to unlock the Manaphy mission using the password feature.
[edit] In other media
Manaphy is apparently the star fourth-generation Pokémon of the ninth Pokémon movie, Pokémon Ranger and the Prince of the Sea: Manaphy, where it is voiced by Yuri Shiratori, sharing the spotlight with Kyogre. None of its relation to Kyogre or otherwise is known for certain at this point, though. It is theorized that since Kyogre has long been recognized as the Lord of the Sea and Manaphy is advertised as the Prince of the Sea, Manaphy is subservient to Kyogre. According to the ninth movie manga adaptation, Manaphy can use its “feelers” to switch peoples' bodies, with "hilarious" results. For example, Ash and Jackie, the Pokémon ranger, get body switched in the first chapter.[1]
It makes an appearance in the Trading Card Game half-deck promoting the 9th Movie.
