Mauricio Gugelmin (born April 20, 1963 in Joinville) is a former Formula One driver from Brazil. He participated in 80 grands prix, debuting on April 3, 1988 for the March team. Both he and team-mate Ivan Capelli qualified in the top half of the grid, but both had problems before completing a lap, which unfortunately typified the fast-but-fragile nature of many of the team's cars. In 1990 Leyton House's heavy sponsorship saw the team's name change. For 1992 he went to Jordan, for what proved to be his final F1 season. He achieved 1 podium (in his home race in 1989), and scored a total of 10 championship points.
He also drove in the CART Championship Car series from 1993-2001, with 147 starts. He usually competed for Bruce McCaw's PacWest team, often alongside fellow former-F1 driver Mark Blundell and had a single win coming in 1997 in Vancouver, finishing 4th in the championship that year. In 1994 and 1995, Gugelmin raced in the Indianapolis 500, with his best result in the 1995 race where he started and finished in 6th position, leading 59 laps. He also held the since broken world speed record for an official motor racing lap, set in qualifying at California Speedway in 1997 at 240.942 mph (387.7586 km/h).
In 2001, Mauricio had a very hard crash at the Texas Motor Speedway. He was in the final minute of the day's last practice session when the rear of his machine got loose on the exit of turn two and turned Gugelmin into a passenger in his own car. He contacted the inside retaining wall - nose first - at 66.2 G's and ricocheted down the back straight. Six seconds after his initial impact, Gugelmin hit the outside wall for the first time with the rear of his car and a force of 113.1 G's. Despite this crash, Gugelmin was uninjured and was cleared to compete at the next race in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
However, Gugelmin's son Giuliano, who was born with a form of cerebral palsy, died less than a week later at age six. Gugelmin struggled through the rest of 2001 and following the season's final race at the California Speedway, announced his retirement.
