This religion is known as Sanatana Dharma, "eternal religion," and Vaidika Dharma, "religion of the Vedas," although Hinduism is the most common English name for it.

These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the guidelines below may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

[edit] Templates

Template:Infobox Hindu teacher/leader has been created for use by this project. It is a first draft and does not use parsing or other fancy code, so it should be easy to use and adapt. If changes are needed, I'll be happy to help (just drop me a line on my talk page), or go ahead and make them to meet the needs of this project. Nightngle 18:12, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion

[edit] Article Construction

Example: Hinduism

Please feel free to add more suggestions.

We should probably discuss article types, which may have different parameters. For example, some of these types may be:

[edit] Texts

Articles on texts should include:

  • Authorship, if known. If the supposed authorship of a text is not established by scholarship, list it as an attribution: "The text is attributed to such-and-such.";
  • Date (use common era (C.E) or before common era (B.C.E.) notation);
  • Place of origin (if known);
  • A rough overview of the contents of the text;
  • Separate sections for particularly important ideas in the text. Alternatively, short descriptions and links to articles on said ideas;
  • Whatever caveats regarding disputes over readings of the text, etc;
  • Associated sect(s) (Indicate, where appropriate, whether the text originated within the sect or was adopted by it after the time of writing.);
  • A "See also" section for internal links;
  • An "External links" section for articles about the text and electronic versions of the text (or perhaps these could be in separate sections);

[edit] Formatting

[edit] Naming and Transliteration

Please see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Dharmic) for the proposed policy.

[edit] Categorizing

  • If an article is already in a subcategory within Hinduism, there is no need list it in the main Hinduism category.
  • When categorizing people, sort by their last names.

[edit] External links

It's easy to get carried away with links (notably the Hinduism page) - especially with several topics being interlinked with each other.

For the Hinduism page specifically,

  • External links should be generic links, that are relevant to Hinduism as a whole. Everything else, i.e. specialized material, can go in the related pages - some of the related stub-pages have few links and these links could enhance those pages. In short, if it can go on another Hinduism-related page, it needs to be there and not on the Hinduism page.

[edit] Links to external resources

  • For Windows users who deal in devanagari and/or romanization on a regular basis, Itranslator could prove to be useful.
