World Class curse

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This term was often used by some pro wrestling purists and even a few wrestlers themselves due to the fact that many competitors of World Class have died suddenly, either from cocaine overdoses, suicides, heart attacks, or in two instances, homicide. According to Skandor Akbar, between 1982 and 2005, he estimates that at least 18 World Class performers are now deceased.

Referee Rick Hazzard also died, but it is not known when or how he died. Preliminary wrestler Jerry Allen/Jerry Arotsky died in 1995 at age 32, but his cause of death is unknown. It is speculated, however, that both likely died due to one of the aforementioned causes.

Rumors about David Von Erich's death have circulated for years, with some wrestling magazines fanning the flames by reporting inaccurate details. Some "newsletters" reported that the Fabulous Freebirds were among the first to find Von Erich's body, but in fact the Freebirds were appearing on cards in Texas at the time of his death. Bruiser Brody and Bill Irwin were among the first to find Von Erich. Brody would later admit he flushed David's pain killers down the toilet, but said he did so as an over reaction. A wrestler having pain killers is common, even today.
