Distriktet ble opprettet 1. april 1974 ved at Stratford-upon-Avon ble slått sammen med Alcester landdistrikt, Shipston-on-Stour landdistrikt, Southam landdistrikt og størsteparten av Stratford-upon-Avon landdistrikt.
