Due to the long Nürburgring, the F1 race was held in connection with a Formula 2 contest. The F2 pilots had to start in a separate grid and were not awarded F1 points.

- Fastest Lap: Jacky Ickx 7'43.800
- The fatal accident of Gerhard Mitter in practise caused the withdrawals of the remaining BMW Team and of Hans Herrmann
- Mario Andretti drove the 4WD-Lotus 63 for very few laps in practise. The heavy fuel load for the race made the car ground out in lap 1 after a jump at Wippermann, causing a crash that also took out Vic Elford
