[edit] History
The college is named for Baptist layman James Harvey Carson (1801-1880) and the Newman family, represented by William Cate Newman (1809-1890). Carson-Newman College was founded in 1851 as the Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary. The College officially became Carson-Newman College in 1888 upon the joining of the all-male Carson College with the all-female Newman College.
Carson-Newman has a rich history of excellence in education, both spiritual and academic. Graduates from C-N go on to continue their education at some of the top seminaries and post-graduate institutions in America.

Carson-Newman is a member of the South Atlantic Conference and fields sixteen varsity teams in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II competition.
