[edit] list of stereotypes

I found that on your userpage by a search. I really like it and have been trying to improve it. I know it's your's but I hope you don't mind. I am trying to make it better. DyslexicEditor 09:44, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Currently it's in a horrible state. If you want to clean it up, that would be great.  Grue  10:46, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
It would be good to regularly save it in a text file in case an admin decides to delete it, you can put it up on a web page. DyslexicEditor 19:57, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you!

Hello, Grue, and thank you for vote on my recent RfA! With a final vote of 62/2/4, I have now been entrusted with the mop, bucket and keys. As I acclimate myself to my new tools, feel free to let me know how you believe I might be able to use them to help the project. Thanks again! RadioKirk talk to me 05:38, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Closing of infidel userbox

Hey, just wondering, wouldn't recreate in userspace be a better compromise? There were a fair number of people on "undelete" and then "keep deleted" as well as a fair number of people in the middle ground saying "userfy". This is probably the best compromise available, as what a lot of us really just have problems with is unencyclopedic templates in general. There's no reason this thing needs to be a template. --Cyde Weys 18:55, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for voting in my RfA!

Just a moment to say thanks for voting in my RfA! I appreciated the comment; the nom didn't get consensus but I'm still glad I accepted it. - Amgine 20:53, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your vote on my RFA

Thank you for voting on my RFA! I decided to withdraw my self-nomination since the people don't see me as an experienced figure yet. Hopefully in the future, my RFAs will be more meticulously planned, and perhaps even more peer reviewed. You didn't seem to leave a comment, so I don't know why in particular you voted. [edit] My RFA

Hi Grue,

Thank you for supporting my RFA! Unfortunately it did not succeed mainly because most opposers wanted me to spend more time on Wikipedia. Thank you for your faith in me & looking forward to your continued support in the future.

[edit] about Cyde Weys

Hey I noticed our comment on the undelete userbox page. Is there anyway to start a request for comment on Cyde on his userbox deletion spree? Aeon 03:26, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RfA Thank You!

Thanks Grue,

I am honored by your support in my recent successful request for adminship. As an administrator, I am your servant, ready to help however I can. (In your case, since you've had the tools longer than I, my best use might be menial labor!) My talk page is always open; should you need anything, or should you see me making a mistake -- probably a common occurrence -- please do let me know. I will depend on the good sense of the community to keep me from making a complete fool of myself! :) In gratitude, Xoloz 18:00, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

PS. You're one of the folks I'm most counting on, because you have the courage to stand apart from the "herd" on the basis of principle -- so please, please share any objections you have with my admin conduct.

[edit] Re: Userboxes (yet another proposal)

Seeing how you opposed the first question on Mackensen's Poll (arguably the most important), I would like to show you my essay on what should be done with userboxes. It is hopefully a new and unseen way of resolving this conflict.

Thanks,

[edit] Rougelike

To follow up what I said on WP:AN, this is truly excellent work :-). Please tell me it's a beta, so much more could be done with this idea... in particular, I don't think this game will be complete until I can cast File RFAR with radius 3 and take down every user around me. --Sam Blanning(talk) 19:22, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
If you don't mind, I'd like to keep the discussion here rather than fragmenting it across our separate talk pages.

Uh, in fact this is supposed to be a final version. But I may have some excessive free time in summer, so I may add some more stuff. If you can compile a list of suggestions and mail it to me, that would be excellent.  Grue  21:52, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
By the 'beta' comment I didn't mean the game was deficient in any way - just that if you wanted to run with the idea of Wikipedia as a rougelike, there are a lot of possibilities. I'll try to get my thoughts in order and send you that email in case you ever do get that free time. --Sam Blanning(talk) 22:28, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Hey Grue, just wondering if you've ever played Nethack, and if so, what classes have you Ascended? --Cyde↔Weys 22:29, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I played it, but not very much. I prefer ADOM or Dungeon Crawl. The only roguelike that I ever won is DoomRL. I tend to do stupid things when playing longer games...  Grue  07:06, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Hrmm, I played ADOM but couldn't really get into it. It seemed like it lacked focus too much ... a lot of skills, a bit less actual dungeon crawling. I never beat DoomRL either, farthest I ever got was level eight or something. But as for Nethack, I've Ascended at least five different classes since 3.3.1 (I lost some log files along the way). --Cyde↔Weys 10:17, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA

Image:One-hundred-WikiThanks.gif Thank you, Grue, for voting in my RFA. It closed with a final result of 75/1/0. Now that I am an administrator here, I will continue to improve this encyclopedia, using my new tools to revert vandalism, block persistent vandals, protect pages that have been vandalized intensively, and close AFD discussions. Any questions? Please contact me by adding a new section on my talk page. Again, thanks to all of you who participated!!! -- King of 23:11, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Migrating into user namespace

Hi Grue,
you are a steadfast supporter of userboxes, so I thought I'd inform you of my move. I have started mirroring migrating userboxes into my user namespace, akin to the German model.
The (over)eager admins don't have the T1 excuse to delete them there and this might end the battles. What do you think? CharonX 19:10, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:User Christian

Within the past month, Template:User Christian has been edit warred over, speedily deleted, gone through deletion review [1], brought back to TfD and had the TfD resolved with a keep on the 28th. (See Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 May 20.) Less than 72 hours later, it has been speedily deleted and the earth salted, by user User:Improv. An admin overturning this would be the start of a wheel war. Speedily deleting 72 hours after a keep TfD result seems to me something that needs to be brought up on deletion review. My impression is that if I were the one to do so, a fair review would not occur. Can you do something appropriate? GRBerry 21:04, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Burning bridges, building walls - I have little hope for any adminsitrative action, except if Jimbo himself were to weight in. Basically we have a cabal of 5 or 6 adminstrators who are hellbent on pushing through the new speedy deletion "policy", disregarding consensus or existing conventions. I made a post regarding recent T2 "policy" mass-deletions on the adminstrative incident board but it sits there, dead in the water, ignored by all. Several RFC and RFA have been launched against the participating administrators, but in the end the pro-userbox admins got the short end of the stick. The sad truth is, I think the battle for the Template space is lost. However, I will not give up, I started migrating userboxes as templates into userspace (aka the German solution, also looked favorably by Jimbo) which should be a showstopper for the hardliner anti-userbox administrators. While templatespace has the (as we know now) easily abusable T1 criteria, Userspace does not. Should they continue their actions there I hope we can expect additional support from the community and have a much better standing in ArbCom decisions, as they cannot use T1 as a figleaf there. BTW, I rescued the template as good as I could, it live now in my userbox space (see my sig). CharonX talk Userboxes 22:54, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Is your homepage eaten by spyware ads?

Hi Grue,

I visited your homepage today, and a pop-up there advertised errorsafe, which symantec doesn't really like. Do you receive such ads when you visit the site? Thanks, Andjam 06:43, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

I know it's not your fault - maybe a note on your [wikipedia] user page warning about the ad for spyware might be a good idea though. Andjam 08:12, 1 June 2006 (UTC) (Amended by Andjam 08:14, 1 June 2006 (UTC))

[edit] FYI

[edit] Template:NoMultilicense

I believe (and I'm not alone in this) that the speedy deletion of this template was unwarranted; can you demonstrate that this template was being divisive? If not, the decision seems at least questionable and I would suggest putting the template back and submitting it to the normal TfD process instead to get a clear consensus. Thanks. — squell 18:46, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK update

Hi Grue, I see you've started an update. I had one ready to start, but please carry on. Don't forget to use the warning box next time, I was considering an update myself when I noticed some subtle things suggesting an update was underway even though there was no warning box showing... but thanks muchly for the update! the more the merrier! ++Lar: t/c 11:38, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
(refactored from my talk, I prefer to keep threads together) What warning box are you talking about? I used Template:updatingDYK on the template itself - is there something else that I forgot?  Grue  11:45, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
It's not a template per se, just a commented out big grey box with a spot to sign. when you start the update, uncomment it. It's right by the timestamp box on the talk page. ++Lar: t/c 12:11, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Please be careful in selecting entries so that the template doesn't have a geographic bias. 4 of the 5 entries you selected were about people/things in/from North America, and 3 of those were specifically about U.S.-based subjects. — BRIAN0918 • 2006-07-18 23:00

Well, non-US submissions are few and far between. The current DYK (compiled by Cactus.man) also has 4 North American topics and one English. I'll try to watch for it next time though.  Grue  09:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Encyclopedia Dramatica

Please reconsider your pointless, wasteful and frankly incomprehensible re-opening of the Encyclopedia Dramatica deletion review. This deletion is overwhelmingly endorsed; there is absolutely no reason to continue to feed the pusilanimous trolls. --Tony Sidaway 11:39, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Grue, I can't see how you accuse Pilotguy of disruption because he closed a deletion review he was involved in and then re-opened it yourself (having also voted in it). Please either reverse yourself or admit that you're deliberately disrupting the encyclopedia. Thanks, Mackensen (talk) 12:14, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

You cannot close a debate if you voted in it. You can revert an improper closure. That's what I did.  Grue  12:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
It's improper because you said so. A consensus of one (maybe two) doesn't impress me much. PilotGuy had the weight of the actual outcome behind me. You're pushing a decidely minority viewpoint here and I would strongly encourage you to withdraw from such actions when you're involved. Mackensen (talk) 12:20, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I would strongly encourage you to not tell me what to do. Closing DRV before 5 days when you're involved in it is such ridiculous action that even anons are allowed to revert it.  Grue  12:24, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your apparant confusion

I noticed that you referred to me as 'one of the most prominent opponents of userboxes'. I would like to point out to you that I have never opposed userboxes, in fact have several on my user page, and even created two of them myself. Please stop spreading this libel of me, it is both false and tiresome. At this point, I consider it a personal attack. Kelly Martin (talk) 12:08, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sorry, you were right.

Accidentaly referred to a sort of "family recipe" in Russian Borscht, not the widely accepted recipe. Thanks for correcting me.

[edit] List of beat 'em ups undeletion request

I have nominated List of beat 'em ups to be undeleted, under the reasoning that it is not redundant to the category; it contains many games which are not covered by the category, and may never be able to be covered by it. In addition, the list can do more than the category. It can put date, developer, release date, system, et al., useful especially for articles that would be difficult to create an article for. I hope that you will vote on this and hopefully support its undeletion, on the basis that it does something that makes it not redundant to the category. [3] - A Link to the Past (talk) 22:24, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Grue, thanks for updating the DYK, but you have chosen a "fact" which is actually a rather nasty attempt at pushing somebody's agenda concerning an article which turned into a soapbox for some people's POV (I mean the full body scan issue). I believe it is very bad practice to abuse DYK that way, so I believe it should be removed ASAP, as otherwise it would prompt more cases like that. Thanks, Bravada, talk - 14:25, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
PS. As a sidenote, one more fact would fit, as the template looks quite "empty" on the main page now.

This is more complex than that - do see the article's talk page. This is one bad example of an article to be linked to from the main page. I believe it should at least be put on hold. Bravada, talk - 14:33, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
PS. To illustrate with a perhaps more recognized example - this reads quite like this one would: "...that despite many Greeks do not recognize it and find it wrong, the Republic of Macedonia continues to persist by this name?" (and I can assure you this can be sourced, referenced and whatever you want). I believe that such controversial issues and statements are improper in DYK.
I agree in that the tagline on T:DYKT was also not in the article, and factually incorrect. I tweaked it, am okay with it being on the main page, but also fully understand Bravada's concerns as I removed a whole heap of junk from that article and added all the citations that are currently there -- Samir धर्म 14:40, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Page on Balezino

Thank you for your improvements on Balezino! It's hard to find information on a lot of smaller Russian towns in the English language, which why Wikipedia is cool for bringing people together. I took the liberty of adding the town to the Udmurt city template - I apologize in advance if you don't think it qualifies. I thought I had added a picture of the station (one is uploaded at WikiCommons though it doesn't seem to have been coded in the history) and would add it to the page. I just want to make sure that I didn't add it and you purposefully deleted it (I'm unable to interpret your edit summary "whoa, that was totally screwed up. Poor station didn't deserve that!") Since I'm sure you're much more familiar with the place than I am, I'll defer to you. InvictaHOG 20:29, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

That makes me feel better - probably because calling it a city (vs. an urban-type settlement) and putting the wrong stub on doesn't really count as such a grave mistake in my book! But thank you for the corrections. I've put a picture up of the station; by all means feel free to replace it if you have a better one. As for the train - the fun is seeing the countryside, not the cities. I mean, honestly, flying into Perm and just staying there without knowing anyone wouldn't be too fun for a foreigner. The same thing happens in America with cross-country car rides, etc, so I know the feeling! InvictaHOG 09:26, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Long-Overdue RfA Thanks from Alphachimp

Thanks for your support in my not-so-recent RfA, which was successful with a an overwhelmingly flattering and deeply humbling total of 138/2/2 (putting me #10 on the RfA WP:100). I guess infinite monkey theorem has been officially proven. Chimps really can get somewhere on Wikipedia.

With new buttons come great responsibility, and I'll try my best to live up to your expectations. If you need assistance with something, don't hesitate to swing by my talk page or email me (trust me, I do respond :)). The same goes for any complaints or comments in regard to my administrative actions. Remember, I'm here for you.

(Thanks go to Blnguyen for the incredible photo to the right.) alphaChimp laudare 01:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] JPD's RfA

Thanks, Grue, for your support at my RfA, which finished with a tally of 94/1/0. I hope I live up to the confidence you have shown in me in my activities as an administrator. JPD (talk) 16:20, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair Use

"Citing a passage that you probably added yourself from some random guideline isn't going to win you many points." - If that were anything close to the truth I would understand your concern. As I have told CrazyRussian, the "random guideline" is actually our Fair Use policy, and the clarifaction of the policy was added by user:AlisonW in consultation with Jimbo. ed g2stalk 09:21, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

As I have clearly explained, the promophotos are not valid Fair Use in these contexts. If you want to take on official policy by blocking another admin then you will find yourself in very hot water. ed g2stalk 13:13, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Grue's analysis in this case. In any case, further edit warring over the image on A Wilhelm Scream will result in blocks; talk this one out. Kelly Martin (talk) 17:25, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kama

Yes, I see, i'll fix it rapidly. Thx, Bocianski 12:58, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Bocianski 13:22, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Halo's RfA

[edit] Thank you

My administratorship candidacy succeeded with a final tally of 81/0/1. I appreciate your early support. Results are at Wikipedia:Recently_created_admins#Durova. Warmly, Durova 20:57, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:RFA/Cynical

Thank you for contributing to my RFA. Unfortunately it failed (final tally 26/17/3). As a result of the concerns raised in my RFA, I intend to undergo coaching, get involved in the welcoming committee and try to further improve the quality of my contributions to AFD and RFA. All the best. Cynical 14:58, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you...

...for your show of support during my recent RfA. It is especially nice to receive an endorsement from an oldskewl Wikipedian such as yourself. If I can ever be of any use or help, do not hesitate to give me a yell. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 15:58, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
