This is an ongoing task and your help would be appreciated. Have a read of some of the existing classifications so you know what this about, and please do read the instructions before starting, as there are a few tweaks and other jobs we can do at the same time as classifying with minimal extra effort and good returns!

[edit] How to grade
- Locate ungraded Beatles related articles which are within the scope of the project. Those we know about reside in Category:Unassessed Beatles articles and Category:Unassessed-importance Beatles articles
- Grade the article using the grading and importance scheme below.
- Once graded, the {{WPBeatles}} template needs to be included (not subst'd) on the Talk page with the correct parameters. (most articles will have it already, but with no parameters).
- Edit the /comments subpage to add comments about why you rated the article the way you did. Please sign and date your comment with ~~~~ as usual.
- Apply small fixes on the spot (or big fixes if you have the time and inclination).
- While you are there, check that the article is in at least one (and usually only one) Beatles category.
- If the article is graded better than a stub but it has a stub template, remove the stub template(s) from the article.
- * If the article in serious need of some 'tender loving care', add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject_The_Beatles#Adopt_an_article
- Add stubs to the "articles to expand" section of the To Do list, add cleanup candidates to that list too.
- If the article needs a photo, put a {{Reqphoto}} template onto the article's talk page and add it to the "photos needed" list on the To do page
- If an article might be in need of either merging or splitting, please note the article first and, for merge proposals, any articles you would suggest merging the article into. update this
[edit] Examples
Place some examples of the template usage/grading procedure here.
- For example, change {{WPBeatles}} to {{WPBeatles|B|Low}} if you think it's a low importance B class article... then explain why on the comments subpage which you can get to by clicking on the edit link in the WPBeatles box.

[edit] Codes and meanings
[edit] Article progress grading scheme
Status | Meaning of Status |
---|---|
Needed | The article hasn't been started yet. You can help by creating it. |
Merge | The article is a merge candidate, as it probably should not stand on its own. Remarks should clarify suggested merge target. If multiple articles are to be merged into one, or if the issue is complicated, it is advised to list it at the end of this article. (Pages relating to the general history of the Beatles can be listed for discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/The Beatles history where the merger of History of the Beatles and related articles is being pondered.) |
Merge or Delete | This WikiProject acknowledges that not everything which can be said about the Beatles belongs in a general enyclopedia. This article is a candidate for a deletion nomination or at best a merge of whatever useful info is in it, to some other article. Suggest the other article if you can. A redirect should be left behind whether info is merged or tossed. |
Article has been merged and is now a redirect. | |
AfD | This WikiProject acknowledges that not everything which can be said about the Beatles belongs in a general enyclopedia. This article is a candidate for AfD and it is so off, that it is recommended that no redirect should be left behind. |
Stub | The article is either a very short article or a stub that will need a lot of work to bring it to A-Class level. |
Start | The article has a decent amount of content, but it is still very weak in certain areas (remarks should clarify where), and may lack a table. |
B | The article is "almost there" but it may be missing one of the following: references, balance of content, NPOV or an important section. Alternatively, the English may need a comprehensive rewrite to make it flow. |
A | The article provides a well-written and complete description of the topic, as described in How to write a Great Article. It includes a well-written introduction to the topic, and an appropriate series of headings to break up the article. It should have sufficient external literature references, preferably from the "hard" literature rather than websites. It should be well illustrated, with no copyright problems. |
GA | Reserved exclusively for articles that have received "Good Article" status, and meet the current criteria for Good Articles. Article should be at or around A-class to receive this tag. |
FA | Reserved exclusively for articles that have received "Featured article" status, and meet the current criteria for featured articles. |
[edit] Article importance grading scheme
Status | Meaning of Status |
---|---|
Top | This article is of the utmost importance to this project, as it forms the basis of all information. |
High | This article is fairly important to this project, as it covers a general area of knowledge. |
Mid | This article is relatively important to this project, as it fills in some more specific knowledge of certain areas. |
Low | This article is of little importance to this project, but it covers a highly specific area of knowledge or an obscure piece of trivia. |
None | This article is of unknown importance to this project. It remains to be analyzed. |
[edit] {{WPBeatles}} instructions
[edit] About the template
This template adds article talk pages, category talk pages, template talk pages, etc (whatever it is placed on) to Category:WikiProject The Beatles articles. It is also used to track article classifications and presents readers with a current "to do" list.
Please be very careful when editing this template if you don't understand MediaWiki Parser Functions. This template is now very complicated and could easily be broken. (Note that you may find m:Magic_words and m:ParserFunctions very helpful in understanding what this does... consider consulting with User:Kingboyk or User:Lar before making any changes, please)
The usage instructions are now stored in a separate page - Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Project banner - and may be safely edited by any project member.
[edit] Usage
Please note: This template should be transcluded ({{WPBeatles}}) and not substituted (subst) because it employs conditional code. Transclusion also allows easy updating of all the Project's talk pages without having to edit hundreds of pages.
A simple way to use the template is to copy the following onto the talk page, and then optionally remove the unnecessary lines. If any further help is needed, please ask at WPT:TB or ask User:Kingboyk or User:Lar.
{{WPBeatles |living = |class = |importance = |apple = |john = |paul = |george = |ringo = |epstein = |martin = |also-beatles = |display= |album = |song = |musician= |arts= |album-importance = |bio-importance = |song-importance = |attention = |needs-infobox= }}
[edit] Parameters
- living: Answer yes if the subject is a living person, no if is a dead person; Answer NA or remove the line if the article is not a biography. Articles tagged yes get a living persons bio warning and are placed in Category:Biography articles of living people.
- class: Options are FA, A, GA, B, Start, Stub, Dab (disambiguation page), Template, Cat (category), Merge, MergeDel (merge or delete), Merged, AFD (deletion candidate), NA (no class, e.g. a WikiProject page). If blank, this will default as Unassessed. Descriptions of the options can be found at WP:TBA#Article progress grading scheme.
- importance: Top, High, Mid, Low. If blank, this will default as Unknown importance. Descriptions of the options can be found at WP:TBA#Article importance grading scheme.
- apple, john, paul, george, ringo, epstein, martin: Answer yes to any of these if the article is about specifically Apple Corps/Apple Records, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Brian Epstein/NEMS, or George Martin. Otherwise, remove. Setting any of these to yes will place the article in the appropriate subtopic's assessment category. The Mathbot-created worklists can be viewed at the following locations:
- Apple: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- John: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- Paul: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- George: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- Ringo: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- G Martin: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- B Epstein: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- also-beatles: If you've answered yes in any of the above (john, paul, apple, etc) and the subject is also relevant to The Beatles as a group answer yes. Otherwise, remove the line. Examples: The article Paul McCartney is most certainly relevant to The Beatles, so answer yes. Flowers in the Dirt is a post-Beatles Macca album, answer no or remove the line.
- The Beatles: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- musician=yes If yes, the article is added to the assessment categories belonging to WikiProject Musicians.
- arts=yes If yes, the article is added to the categories belonging to the Arts and entertainment workgroup. Don't set musician and arts to yes; musician is a higher level.
- display: a text string to display before "-related" in the template text. (martin=yes forces the template to display "George Martin-related"; set display=Beatles to force it back to "Beatles-related") Remove this parameter if not setting it. An empty display=parameter doesn't work. Wikilinks may be included, for example: display=[[Wings (band)|Wings]]
- album: Answer yes if the subject is an album. This displays a message that the article is within the scope of WikiProject Albums, and adds it to the categories Category:WikiProject Albums articles, Category:Album articles by quality, and Category:Album articles by importance. Once again, this allows our articles to be assessed for another WikiProject too.
- Albums: (Index · Statistics · Log)
- song: Answer yes if the subject is a song. Displays a message that the article is within the scope of WikiProject Songs, and adds it to the categories Category:WikiProject Song articles and Category:Song articles by quality.
- Songs: (Index · Statistics · Log).
- album-importance, song-importance: these are the importance levels of this article to the Album and Song WikiProjects. It's ok to delete these lines if you're not totally confident in how to use the template. WikiProject Songs don't currently assess importance, so this parameter is ignored.
- bio-importance: Importance to WikiProject Musicians or the Arts and entertainment workgroup. Has no affect if neither musician= or arts= are yes.
- attention: Answer yes if the page needs immediate attention, otherwise remove this line. If yes a banner message is displayed and the article is placed in Category:WikiProject The Beatles articles needing attention (and Category:Biography articles needing attention if a biography).
- needs-infobox: Answer yes if the article lacks an infobox, otherwise remove this line. This places the article in Category:WikiProject The Beatles articles needing infoboxes. If the article is about an album, it also displays the {{Needsinfobox}} template and places the article in Category:Needs album infobox. If the article is about a song, a banner is displayed and the article is placed in Category:Articles in need of Song Infoboxes. If the article is a biography, it is placed in Category:Biography articles needing infoboxes.
[edit] Example 1: basic
{{WPBeatles}}
For main space articles which have not yet been assessed, simply use {{WPBeatles}}. This default places the article in Category:Unassessed Beatles articles and Category:Unassessed-importance Beatles articles, and doesn't change the wording of the template in any way.
[edit] Example 2: full
Todo: Some examples (with named articles) of how to use the new template. Or are folks happy with the above instructions?

Billy J. Kramer - Within scope I would have thought. I'm thinking maybe we should have a Brian Epstein/NEMS category? --kingboyk 23:35, 5 April 2006 (UTC)- Let It Be (disambiguation) - A dab page, should remain uncategorised
A Cellar Full of Noise - Epstein autobiography, good for the above proposed Epstein category. --El Slameron 01:51, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- I've created Category:Brian Epstein, although I wonder if it should be Category:Brian Epstein/NEMS or have a subcategory Category:Artists managed by Brian Epstein. Anyway, the category is in place and contains Mr Epstein's bio, his book, and some of the artists he managed. --kingboyk 08:17, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Merge candidates
[edit] Merge proposals:
- Beatle haircut --> article about Beatles phenomena
- Leave a redirect. What would the overall article be called, and what other articles would get merged in? I sort of favour leaving this one as is (It already has Mop Top redirecting to it I think)... not strongly though. ++Lar: t/c
- Of course my merge suggestion was just that: a suggestion. But I think the article is quite short and plain. There are other fashion and culture influences the Beatles have contributed to or been responsible for. I would prefer though, to refrain from suggesting a new article name until the bulk of the work on Beatles articles has been carried out - then we can see what shorter articles and stubs remain and possible be better able to come up with an article at that point (if one is deemed necessary). For that reason, for the meantime, I'd say leave it as it is and discuss it later. --Mal 20:19, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- Nod. It's a long and winding road from where we are now to "done". Keep suggesting stuff, the more we have a handle on what should go where, the better off we will be. Besides if we can find a few more items to merge in (the suits they wore on Ed Sullivan started a trend among bands, for instance) to "Beatles style" (or "Beatles stylistic influences" if you prefer) we have a winner... knowing what we want to call it doesn't mean we have to do the work first! whenever is soon enough. (that's a bit eventualist I realise... ++Lar: t/c 21:13, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
- The Beatles record sales, worldwide charts --> Beatles trivia
-
- It's not really trivia. It really needs a {{wikify}}. Beyond that, my 'vote' would be leave as is or see if it could be merged into The Beatles discography. It would need to be a slow and painful merge so as not to spoil that nice discography, alas. --kingboyk 05:16, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- I think the article is a bit too black and white... its not 'sexy' enough, if you get me. It needs to be formatted properly so that the (wealth of) information included there is easy for the poor wee human brain to put into context. As it stands, it would make your head spin a bit. Looking back at your comment Kingboy, I think that's probably what you mean by "wikify". Though even then, I'd consider the article to probably be a bit stark. I agree with developing it though, and see how it ends up looking - a decision can better be made after that. --Mal 05:32, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Not sure. It's a long article. If we believe that such detail is necessary, Keep. Otherwise merge as Mal suggested. If we're merging into History of The Beatles it will have to wait. I have serious reservations vis a vis History of The Beatles and its relationship to the flagship article. History of The Beatles as a fork just has not worked. --kingboyk 05:19, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Let's wait and see what comes up in the Albums section. There may be a Decca Sessions album article which we can merge to.
- Logically speaking, the Decca audition is part of the Beatles history (and also trivia information). Man I which I could remember the rules I was taught at uni regarding databases! The concepts and methodology would definately apply here! --Mal 05:32, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure if this should stand alone, or if the Beatles in Hamburg should have a larger more comprehensive article (which couold be quite spiffing if we can get photos). --kingboyk 16:12, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
